"This I Believe" by Students from Isaac Dickson Elementary School
5th Graders from Isaac Dickson Elementary School recently shared their "This I Believe" essays with WCQS.
In 1951 journalist Edward R. Murrow asked famous and everyday people to write essays about their beliefs – and to record them for broadcast. The This I Believe essays became a touchstone for radio listeners across the country – giving voice to the core values of a nation. 
This year WCQS recorded This I Believe essays from the entire 5th grade at Isaac Dickson Elementary School in Asheville. Working with Janet Hurley of True Ink and Asheville Writers in the Schools the children wrote essays on things they believe in – everything from recycling to Legos. They wrote and rewrote, practiced, and practiced some more. When they were ready, they came to the WCQS studios to record their essays.

Isaac Dickson's This I Believe Project is part of a year long program Writing to Change the World, with major funding through the Asheville City Schools Foundation.
A few years back NPR brought This I Believe back to life for current audiences. Based on a 1950s radio program of the same name, Americans from all walks of life share the 
personal philosophies and core values that guide their daily lives. During its four years on NPR, This I Believe engaged listeners in a discussion of the core beliefs that guide their daily lives. We heard from people of all walks of life — the very young and the very old, the famous and the previously unknown, Nobel laureates, teachers, prison inmates, students, politicians, farmers, poets, entrepreneurs, activists and executives.
