SPOILER
ALERT!
Covering the Olympics when many of the broadcasts are tape-delayed can
be a little aggravating for some of our listeners. If you plan on listening
to the news in the two weeks, but don't want to know the results of Olympic
events until air on U.S. television, please be advised of the following
statement from NPR:
NPR is staffing the Olympics
and will do extensive reporting on sports and other news from Beijing.
As part of that coverage, we will report competition results in Newscast
and on other programs. Sometimes these results will air before people
in the U.S. have a chance to see taped events on television. This may
on occasion be frustrating to listeners who were planning to learn the
results through tape delay broadcasts. While we can sympathize, we see
the Olympics as a news event, and our goal is to report news as it happens.
To withhold results or provide so-called spoiler alerts each time we
report on a new gold medal winner is not practical, especially in this
time of instant communication and the 24-hour news cycle.
