WCQS began broadcasting in HD RadioTM technology in early August, 2008.

AUGUST 2008

What is HD RadioTM technology? HD RadioTM technology allows you to get the same clarity of sound from your radio as you do from your CDs. Approved by the FCC as the digital broadcast system for the radio industry, the noise and interference that cause the static, hiss, pops and fades heard on today's analog radios will be virtually eliminated with HD RadioTM digital broadcasting. In addition to crystal clear reception, HD RadioTM technology will enhance sound fidelity. You will be able to hear WCQS in its purest, clearest, digital form.

What else does HD RadioTM technology do?
It allows new wireless data services to be delivered from WCQS. HD RadioTM receivers will have the capability of displaying important data, including breaking news and stock quotes, local weather and traffic, song titles and artists, and more.

It also creates the ability to divide the digital bandwidth into multiple audio streams, without significant loss of audio quality. These supplemental audio channels offer a great opportunity for WCQS to diversify its service and bring new choices to our listeners. For example, our new station - WYQS - will become the supplemental service on WCQS so that listeners throughout the region will be able to hear this new news/talk service.

When can I hear these supplemental audio channels? WYQS is now broadcasting on our HD 2 station (WCQS 88.1-2).

How can I hear WCQS' broadcast in HD RadioTM Technology?
To hear WCQS in its purest digital form, you will need a special HD RadioTM receiver for either your car or home audio system.

The good news is that WCQS will remain on the same dial position (88.1) and you can still hear WCQS with your current analog radio. But if you have a new HD RadioTM receiver you will hear us in our new digital format and be able to receive our supplemental audio channel. Right now WCQS is only broadcasting in HD on its 88.1 frequency. Within the year, we will be converting the rest of our translators to HD digital technology and most everyone in our coverage area will be able to hear both WCQS and WYQS at that time on HD Radio. We also hope to expand our analogue reach for WYQS, but that may take a bit longer.

Where can I purchase a digital radio?
And when? HD RadioTM receivers are on the market. Kenwood, JVC and Panasonic are a few among the major manufacturers with car units.
