Friday - 1/11/13
7 pm: FROM THE TOP
This week, From the Top comes to you from the National Educators Association Annual Meeting at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago, Illinois, where you'll hear a 17-year-old violist play the music of William Walton, an 18-year-old baritone sing from Songs of Travel by Ralph Vaughn Williams, and scenes from Stravinksy's "The Soldier's Tale" performed by teenagers from Chicago and one very cool teacher.

10 pm: JAZZ SHACK
In June of 1943 an all-star jazz concert was presented at New York's Town Hall which featured some of the principal players working on 52nd St. We'll begin tonight with some live tracks featuring violinist Stuffy Smith and pianist Teddy Wilson. Also scheduled are tracks from tenor sax Tina Brooks and vibist Bobby Hutcherson.

Saturday - 1/12/13

John Lithgow hosts a program including his own reading of the classic chiller “The Monkey’s Paw,” by W.W. Jacobs, and “Two Words,” by Isabel Allende, performed by Lisa Fugard

12 pm: THE SPLENDID TABLE
This week we take a look at the sometimes scandalous world of olive oil with Tom Mueller author of “Extra Virginity.” Legendary vegetarian cook Anna Thomas brings us her take on steaming bowls of green soup for the winter months. Her book is Love Soup. We talk with Christian De Benedetti about his book The Great American Ale Trail, and play another round of Stump the Cook with Modern Family's Ty Burrell.

1 pm: MARKETPLACE MONEY
This week on Marketplace Money, guest host Barbara Bogaev takes a close look at charges found frequently on the bills we pay and makes sense of them with help from David Cay Johnston, author of "The Fine Print." We also get a visit to the floor of the Consumer Electronics Show where reporter Queena Kim tests out some great gadgets and David Weinberg examines the controversial issue of using recycled water known as "grey water." Plus, we'll talk about the level of satisfaction people get from spending money on crowdfunding projects.

3 pm: BACKSTORY: STRAIGHT SHOT-GUNS IN AMERICA
The US has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in the world. How did this come to be? Was America’s “gun culture” present from the very beginning?
On this episode, the History Guys look at who has had access to guns in the U.S., and what those guns have meant to the people who have owned them. They also consider the importance of guns at the time the Second Amendment was drafted, and explore the central role government has played in the dissemination of firearms to citizens. And they pay a visit to a 21st century version of the armories of the past: a gun show.

Calamari is on one side of the plate, sliced hog rectums are on the other. Which is which? We got a tip about a meat plant selling pig intestines as fake calamari, wondered if it could be true, and decided to investigate. Doppelgangers, doubles, evil twins and not-so-evil twins.

6 pm: A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
This week on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor, it's a live broadcast performance from the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, California. With special guests, male vocal ensemble Chanticleer and singer-songwriter-fiddler Sara Watkins. Plus, the Royal Academy of Radio Actors, Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon.

Sunday - 1/13/13
7 am: ON BEING
It’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by all the bad news and horrific pictures in the world. This is a form of empathy, Joan Halifax says, that works against us. This zen abbott and medical anthropologist has bracing, nourishing thoughts on finding buoyancy rather than burnout in how we work, live, and care.
