7 pm: FROM THE TOP
This week From the Top is in Kalamazoo, Michigan for a show featuring a 17-year-old tuba player and a duo from the Percussion Scholarship Group in Chicago. You'll also hear from two teenage string players.
8 pm: SYMPHONYCAST
As spring as sprung for the most part the locale is less important, but I think the planners for the Cleveland Orchestra had a great idea when they decided to hold a few of their January concerts - like this one - in sunny Miami.
Saturday - 7/21
12 pm: THE SPLENDID TABLE
This week on the Splendid Table we're cooling off with homemade ice cream, from Ohio's ice cream maven, Jeni Britton Bauer, author of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home Jane and Michael Stern are at Nick's Kitchen in Huntington, IN and we look at the ways in which food is used as a political tool with Susan Glasser, Editor in Chief of "Foreign Policy" magazine.
4 pm: THIS AMERICAN LIFE – "Amusement Park"
We head to some of the happiest places on Earth: Amusement Parks! Jonathan Goldstein revisits one he worked at as a teen, Ira takes us behind the scenes at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, where the staff so loves their jobs they make music videos and other videos.
6 pm: A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
Coming up this week on A Prairie Home Companion, the first of our summer compilation series, with a program devoted to the family vacation. Or more specifically, the family car trip. Joe Ely sings "The Highway Is My Home," Gillian Welch and David Rawlings appear as hitchhikers, The Wailin' Jennys sing "Going Down the Road," and Studs Terkel picks Dusty and Lefty up roadside in The Lives of the Cowboys. Plus, Al Franken and the cautionary tale of Florian and Myrtle Krebsbach and how important it is not to leave your spouse in a gas station convenience mart. In Lake Wobegon, how a trip to the Grand Canyon can change a young person's outlook on life.
Sunday - 7/22
7 am: BEING
Terry Tempest Williams on family get-togethers where no one agrees on anything; and the importance of beauty as a strategy for survival.
