Friday – 11/9

7 pm: FROM THE TOP
This week, From the Top comes from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, with the talented students from the Great Wall International Music Academy. You'll hear several talented musicians who hail from Kentucky to Shanghai, as well as hear a famous Chinese folk composer's piece played by the Great Wall Soloists.

10 pm: JAZZ SHACK
In 1964 the Thelonious Monk Quartet had a celebrated run at a small LA jazz club called “It Club.” We’ll begin tonight with their recorded jams on “Straight, No Chaser” and “Teo.” Monk’s tenor sax man, Charlie Rouse, was part of the Tad Dameron band in 1947 and we’ll next sample the Blue Note recordings fromj that year. Also scheduled are 1955 tracks from Chico Hamilton, 1953 tracks from the J.J. Johnson Sextet with Clifford Brown.

Saturday – 11/10
7 am: SELECTED SHORTS

12 pm: THE SPLENDID TABLE
We're taking a look at the specialty coffee movement with Michaele Weissman author of God in a Cup. Britain's Diana Henry, author of Salt, Sugar, Smoke joins us with her take on where to go for flavor inspirations and Andy Crouch, author of Great American Craft Beer introduces us to session beer.

1 pm: MARKETPLACE MONEY
This week on Marketplace Money, we celebrate America's military troops and their families with a pair of stories about how veterans are finding their way financially after coming home from war. We'll also explore the upside of payday lending and how virtual bank accounts can be a tool for teaching kids about money. We'll speak with an author about how improving doctor/patient relationships can help lower your medical bills. Plus, we'll look at why women may be cheating more now that they're earning more and why paying for cable channels that you don't watch is not a waste of money.

3 pm:  THE MOTH RADIO HOUR
George Plimpton gives an auction winner a star-studded walk through legendary NYC eatery Elaine's; rookie reporter Lewis Lapham learns a lot about the world when he has to break some bad news to a new widow; World Boxing Light Heavyweight Champion Jose Torres defines and then conquers fear; Christopher Hitchens is deified in Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

This week, at the suggestion of a 14-year-old listener, we bring you stories from the awkward, confusing, hormonally charged world of middle school. Including a teacher who transforms peer pressure into a force for good, and reports from the frontlines of the middle school dance.

6 pm: A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
Coming to you this week from the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois, it's a live broadcast performance of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. With special guests, Grammy Award-winning baritone Nathan Gunn, author and public radio quizmaster Peter Sagal, and sultry Southern chanteuse Lera Lynn. Plus, the Royal Academy of Radio Actors, Sue Scott, Tim Russell, and Fred Newman; trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, clarinetist Kim Cusack, and our good friend Butch Thompson join The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band; and the latest News from Lake Wobegon.

Wednesday – 11/14
7 pm: BACKSTORY – “Coming Home: A History of War Veterans”
This year, the number of deaths by suicide among active-duty military personnel exceeded the number of combat fatalities. It's another reminder of the psychological toll of war fighting and of the challenges that all veterans confront when they return home. This week on BackStory, the American History Guys mark Veterans Day with a look back at the homecoming experiences of previous generations of vets. Are vets only as popular as the wars they’ve fought in?
