Ring in the New Year with WCQS!

Holiday programming on WCQS concludes this week with offering for New Year celebrations.

 

Saturday - December 29th

 

3 pm: THE CAPITOL STEPS NEW YEAR'S SPECIAL
Putting the MOCK in democracy -it’s the annual hour-long wrap –up of the year with everyone’s favorite musical political punsters, The Capitol Steps.

Sunday - 12/30
3 pm: L’ENFANCE DU CHRIST
Hector Berlioz’s sacred oratorio about the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt to avoid persecution. Charles Munch directs the Boston Symphony Orchestra & Chorus – 90 minutes.


6 pm: SEASON'S GRIOT
An hour-long Kwanzaa celebration in story and song, again hosted by Madafo Lloyd Wilson. This year's program features youth as the special guest griots, reading their own original and traditional stories. Familiar and favorite elements of Griot will also be in place with plenty of music, and an original composition by the show's poet laureate, Beverly Fields Burnette.

Monday - December 31st
7 pm: THE CAPITOL STEPS NEW YEAR'S SPECIAL

8 pm: WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEW YEAR'S EVE?
An hour-long festive and varied music mix good for the days or evenings leading up to New Year’s Day, and for New Year’s Day itself, with some songs that directly refer to the holiday and others that fit into its spirit. Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Helen Merrill are some of the featured performers. Songs include some familiar staples and some lesser-known New Year’s holiday recordings, as well as a set commemorating songwriter and New Year’s Eve baby Jule Styne (born Dec. 31, 1905). A diverse, laid-back and mood-nuanced popular-song celebration of the New Year holiday.

9 pm: TOAST OF THE NATION
An NPR tradition every New Year's Eve since the 1970s. It's jazz that you can party to, all night from coast to coast, with countdowns to midnight  across the country.. Spirited, improvised, grooving and swinging, each segment is a stop in a sequence of celebrations and contributing something new to the musical feast. WBGO's Rhonda Hamilton anchors the show. Included in the line-up:John Scofield and his Uberjam Band, Henry Cole and The Afrobeat Collective and Wynton Marsalis with Vince Giordano.

Tuesday - January 1st
11 am: NEW YEAR'S DAY FROM VIENNA 2013
The Vienna Philharmonic presents its ever popular annual New Year's Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. You'll hear your favorite waltzes, polkas and more -- a festive way to start off the New Year.
